Press release – MoDASyS

National Research and Development Institute for Biological Sciences Bucharest (INCDSB) started the implementation of the project "Modelling, Design, and Analysis of Synthetic Systems Capable of Self-Assembly - MoDASyS" , co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Operational Programme Competitiveness 2014-2020. The total value of the project is 8.507.912,72 lei, 7.184.081,50 lei representing the European Regional Development Fund co-financing and 1.323.831,22 lei representing the co-financing of the Romanian Government, based on the financing contract no. 24 of 01.09.2016 concluded with the National Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation as Intermediary Body, on behalf of and for the Ministry of European Funds as Managing Authority for the Competitiveness Operational Programme.
The project is being implemented in Bucharest for 48 months.
The general scientific objective of the project is to introduce and develop research in the field of DNA-based nanotechnology in Romania and to increase the scientific capacities and competences of Romanian researchers, so as to increase the Romanian participation in research at EU level. This objective will be achieved by carrying out research activities in the field of nanotechnology, through the participation of a researcher from abroad, with concrete results in the field and who will lead, at scientific level, the team of researchers of the INCDSB institute.
The investment is intended to contribute to the transformation of the INCDSB institute into a European centre for Computational DNA Nanotechnology, proposing among other things to support at least 8 new researchers within INCDSB, to publish at least 20 scientific articles, and to submit 3 project proposals for the Horizon 2020 Competition. The specific scientific activities developed in the project will be focused on two priority axes, namely:
1. Automating the design process of DNA structures, with the aim of achieving nano-level matter processing capabilities similar to 3D printing.
2. Develop a systematic discipline whereby the structural and dynamic tools of DNA Nanotechnology are brought together to create assemblies of coordinated nano-entities (using DNA material) that will perform well-defined actions on a large scale.

Project co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Competitiveness Operational Programme 2014-2020.
