Re-evaluation of mine tailings for innovative metal biorecovery
Description
The REVIVING project capitalises on the potential of mining tailings as a secondary resource for metal recovery, promoting recycling, hazardous waste reduction and the transition to a circular economy.
Building on the results of the ERAMIN BioCriticalMetals project, the project is developing innovative models for the efficient recycling of metals from mining residues by manipulating the indigenous microbiome in tailings tailings and applying advanced bioleaching and hydrometallurgical processes. The activities aim to obtain secondary source metals (copper, manganese, zinc, molybdenum, tungsten and magnesium) from mines in Portugal and Romania, transforming tailings deposits from passive areas into productive systems.
REVIVING proposes a clean, economical and innovative solution for the recovery of metals, contributing to the reintegration of residues into the economic circuit and to the reconversion of mining land for agriculture, forestry and other social uses, thus supporting the European circular economy objectives.
