Happy Birthday, România! Happy Birthday, Antarctica!
Romania’s National Day coincides with the celebration of the sixty-second anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty on December 1, 1959. INCDSB, through the Department of Arctic and Antarctic Research, raised the Romanian flag in the distant land of Antarctica for four years.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused over 250 million infections worldwide (over 1.7 million cases in Romania), and over 5 million deaths (over 55,000 in Romania). Several vaccines are already available and they have helped slow the spread of the virus. Our institute is actively engaged in the next stage of the fight against COVID-19: to identify the optimal drug treatments according to the patient’s co-morbidities. Our specialists have integrated a massive set of molecular data about the virus and its effects in the body, which they have analyzed to identify a number of promising drugs for treatment. The study provides a concrete step towards precision treatments in SARS-CoV-2 and was published in the journal “Briefings in Bioinformatics”, one of the most famous in the world in computational biology.
Authors: Nicoleta Siminea, Victor Popescu, Jose Angel Sanchez Martin, Daniela Florea, Georgiana Gavril, Ana-Maria Gheorghe, Corina Itcus, Krishna Kanhaiya, Octavian Pacioglu, Laura Ioana Popa, Romica Trandafir, Maria Iris Tusa, Manuela Sidoroff, Mihaela Paun, Eugen Czeizler, Andrei Paun, Ion Petre. Network analytics for drug repurposing in COVID-19. Briefings in Bioinformatics, in press, 2021.
